Dave Feschuk: Everything’s coming up Leafs. Maybe playoff readiness isn’t such a stretch

Playoff readiness is the Maple Leafs’ only relevant pursuit. Their willingness and ability to score in close proximity to the blue paint in a successful four-game road sweep, rather than relying on the stretch pass, might have been most impressive development on offence, Dave Feschuk writes.

Dave Feschuk: The Leafs have seen the light in California. They don’t need more sun

Maybe it’s the giddy buzz of a hot streak. Maybe it’s the humility born from the franchise’s accumulated failure. But the current road swing in California has revealed an earnestness to this Leafs team that’s undeniable, Dave Feschuk writes.

Dave Feschuk: The Leafs are winning despite no goals from Nick Ritchie — not for lack of trying

In some ways, Ritchie’s dry spell is no big deal with 12 wins in 14 games heading into Friday night’s road date with the Sharks. But they also ranked a dismal 22nd in goals per game. Ritchie’s glacial start clearly wasn’t what the club envisioned when they signed him in July, Dave Feschuk writes.

Dave Feschuk: The Leafs’ bargain third line is built for playoff hockey. They just hope it’s built to last

The grittiness of the unit centred by David Kämpf offers a tantalizing vision of a style that figures to be effective in the playoffs for the Maple Leafs — so long as its purveyors are physically able to perform when it matters, Dave Feschuk writes.

Dave Feschuk: The more Leafs the better in Beijing. A playoff rehearsal with gold-medal stakes is exactly what they need

Special K: David Kämpf and Ondrej Kaše are giving the Leafs bang for the buck

Both Kämpf and Kaše have had a positive impact on special teams in particular. Of late, the power play (25 per cent, sixth in the league) and penalty kill (third at 87.5 per cent) have helped overcome a lack of finish at even strength. All of that represents a bonus for the Leafs, who landed Kämpf ($1.5 million U.S.) and Kaše ($1.25 million) at bargain prices on the free-agent market.
